Synopsis
Seventeen-year-old Alyssa thought she knew who she was. She had her family and her best friends and, most important, she had Sarah. Sarah, her girlfriend, with whom she dreamed with about the day they could move far away and live out and proud and accepted for themselves, instead of having to hide their relationship.

Alyssa never thought she would have to make that move by herself, but disowned by her father and cut off from everyone she loves, she is forced to move hundreds of miles away to live with Carly, the biological mother she barely knows, in a town where everyone immediately dismisses her as "Carly's girl." As Alyssa struggles to forget her past and come to terms with her future, will she be able to build a new life for herself and believe in love again? Or will she be forced to relive the mistakes that have cost her everything and everyone she cared about?

National Book Award finalist Julie Anne Peters has written a compelling novel about coming out, finding love, and discovering your place in the world. Alyssa's story will speak to anyone who has known the joy and pain of first love and the struggle to start over again.

My Review

This book completely summarizes what it means to be heartbroken in an unaccepting world and trying to find new love while still moving over your pain. She Loves You She Loves You Not is a great contemporary read in which the character seems so real it's as if it was written by a teen.

I love that this book was written in first person present tense. It can be very difficult, and it is also unpopular to write in present tense, but when done correctly it can instantly place you in the middle of the story. I also liked the way the main character was presented. Right off the bat she comes off as a bit bitter about everything that is going on in her life. Allysa is rough around the edges, but what teen isn't these days?

The romance was also very real. There were moments when the characters thought they knew what they felt and moments when they really weren't sure. At that age people question a lot of what they go through and it is always refreshing to read about a "real" relationship.

The way the author wrote the story line made it easy to dive right in. It's almost as if the reader is placed right smack into the story without given too much back history in the beginning. You know how some movies start at the end and work to the beginning? It wasn't exactly like that, but it had the same effect. You didn't know too much, but you did learn as you went along.

I will definitely be picking up more from this author because she has a writing style that is hard not to love. Overall I think I just appreciate the way the author kept the story real. This could very well be happening to a teen girl out there somewhere.

She Loves You She Loves You Not earns four lanterns from Truth Be Told. Pick this book up if you want to read about love, acceptance, all mixed up with some family drama.
