Lungs is Florence and the Machine's debut album. Florence Welsh, the singer of this band, has a voice that is just phenomenal. Welsh can hit crazy high notes and manage to keep a steady voice in each song. This album is one of my favorites.

Originally Florence grew up in South London, and a lot of her culture can be heard in this music. The album has 13 songs total all around 4 minutes long. Each song has its own distinct sound. This album reminds me of a well-rounded mix tape. There is a soft acoustic style song, a drum beat/African sound, a fast paced rock song. Just about everything you could hope for.

"Howl" is one of my favorite songs on this album. The piano intro has this creepy vibe; it's the kind of song you listen to when you're in a dark room, writing, or just wanting to be alone. There is also something so poetic and metaphorical about her lyrics not only in "Howl" but in most songs. Take this line for example:

"Be careful of the curse that falls on young lovers

Starts so soft and sweet and turns them to hunters

Hunters, hunters, hunters" (Florence and the Machine 2009)

"Kiss with a Fist" is another awesome song. This one is a bit shorter than the others, but it is definitely packed with the same outstanding vocals, and rocking fast-paced background music. If you have seen the movie Whip it, starring Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page, you may recognize this song, it was featured on the soundtrack and in the movie.

Florence and the Machine's Lungs album is hard to label in terms of genre. This album will appeal to listeners of a variety of music. If you enjoy indie rock such as that of Bright Eyes, or Band of Horses you will enjoy a variety of the songs on this album. If you enjoy World Music, you will truly love the "Drumming Song".

This is one album that will not disappoint, be prepared to have this in your car for weeks at a time. I give Lungs a five lantern rating. You MUST own it.
