Synopsis
There can only be one alpha.

Bryn is finally settling into her position as alpha of the Cedar Ridge Pack—or at least, her own version of what it means to be alpha when you're a human leading a band of werewolves. Then she finds a teenage boy bleeding on her front porch. Before collapsing, he tells her his name is Lucas, he's a Were, and Bryn's protection is his only hope.

But Lucas isn't part of Bryn's pack, and she has no right to claim another alpha's Were. With threats—old and new—looming, and danger closing in from all sides, Bryn will have to accept what her guardian Callum knew all along. To be alpha, she will have to give in to her own animal instincts and become less human. And, she's going to have to do it alone.

Bryn faces both the costs, and the rewards, of love and loyalty, in this thrilling sequel to Raised by Wolves.

My Review

To be quite honest, with the way Raised by Wolves ended I wasn't sure how there would be a sequel. It ended in a tightly wrapped package with all the plot ends closed up. I was left wanting to know more but I didn't need to know more. So in the end I was happy to hear there would be a sequel. After reading Trial by Fire, this book absolutely met and exceeded my expectations for a sequel.

This series is awesome. It gives such a fresh perspective on the typical "Werewolf novel". Even though it is a paranormal there is nothing cliché or typical about this book. The plot in this sequel catches your interest and slowly builds up. I also like that this book introduced other figures, it wasn't only about werewolves, though I don't want to give too much away.

I love Bronwyn as a character. She is so awesome and so different than most female lead characters out there. I love that she is strong; she is a great example of how some girls should be. Not in the whole werewolf chick way, but in the "be miss independent" way.

One thing that makes this book stand out amongst other paranormal and YA books in general is the lack of overly romantic teens. This book has a relationship in it but it isn't overwhelming, they aren't always hormonal and "let's get hot and heavy" but it is sweet when you get to those parts.

I can't wait for more books from Jennifer Lynn Barnes, she is an awesome author who only seems to grow and better her writing with each new title. I am so excited for book three in this series and you can bet it's going to be a preorder!

Overall I give Trial by Fire a five lantern rating. I am really happy that Jennifer decided to turn this into a series. Read this series if you haven't already.
