Find Time to Read for Pleasure

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 09:49 PM PST

I have always been a supporter of reading for pleasure, not only reading assigned books. Reading books for pleasure can help students gain a faster reading speed, improve their vocabulary, and also learn how to read critically. High school students and college students should especially try to fit time into their schedule for pleasured reading. If a student adds pleasured reading into their schedule it will help them get a break from the busy life of studies. This is also one of the easiest activities to do when you are exhausted, you don't have to drive anywhere, you don't have to get dressed up, and you can do it just about anywhere.

Students who attend online colleges are usually the students with the least amount of free time. Students who attend college full time at a distance (online learning) struggle to have enough time to study, let alone time to squeeze in reading for pleasure. Most of these distance learners have families or full time jobs as well. Being a full time student and a single mother, I can relate to the difficulty of squeezing in leisure reading. One easy way to squeeze in leisurely reading is by purchasing audiobooks. Audiobooks can be uploaded to an MP3 player or listened to while driving. I love to listen to them while working out at the gym.

If you aren't an audio reader than another easy trick you can do is, carry a book with you wherever you go. I often find myself stuck with free time between classes, or while waiting at the doctors. If you have a book with you at all times you can read whenever free time strikes.

The one thing I have found that works the best, is to simply schedule in a set reading time. I usually schedule in at least one hour in the day to read. Usually when I read, I do it before bed or at my daughters nap time.

Reading for pleasure can do a lot of great things for your life, be sure to find some time to do it.

Well readers, what do you do to squeeze in some leisurely reading time?
