You read that right! You can earn a free car this year selling on Etsy. But if you’re thinking “sweepstakes” or “giveaway”, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. Catch that first word… earn!

One Step at a time!

One of my favorite sayings or quotes is this:

You don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step.

I find that encouraging and it makes me braver than I would be otherwise. I realize that I don’t have to fly to the top of the steps, I don’t even have to know what’s there, I only have to take one little step. I (we) can do that!

What happens if you applied that same thought process toward the financial outcome of your online business? What if you set some baby-step goals financially.

Free Cable, Free Water, Free Car

Our online income comes in lots of little chunks. A little from selling jewelry, a little from selling felt, a little from advertising here on the site, etc. None of them are enough to live on, and even combined they don’t totally provide for our life. Yet.

But as these small income streams started to grow, I always associated the money with some cost of living, such as the cable bill, the water bill, or the car payment.

How much does your internet access cost? Ours is expensive at about $75.00 a month. But since it’s pretty important in our online business, the internet is the first thing I wanted to pay for when I started out. The next thing was to cover the costs of web-hosting and domain registration. When those were covered, I started looking toward living expenses, like car insurance.

Now once things grow, you have to be sure to do your accounting properly and you probably shouldn’t just pay your car payment with your PayPal account, but the point is the same. You covered it.

I can tell you, it makes the rewards of the work much more tangible when I can get in my car and drive down the road and think… “I made the money for this car entirely online. No boss. No schedule. No particular spot I have to show-up to every day.”

So, rather than look at how many items you have to sell to “make a living”, maybe look at how many items you have to sell to get a free car. Or free groceries, free haircuts, free shoes… :-)

What “free” goal are you working toward today?
